About the Author
Professor George Bruce, has 30 years’ industrial experience in shipbuilding, including more recent roles in facilities development, research and innovation. He has acted as a consultant to shipbuilders and marine companies across the world and contributed to committees, steering groups and associations across the industry. He currently teaches and conducts research at the Newcastle University School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle, UK.

Former lecturer in Naval Architecture at Plymouth University, UK, and former Manager of Policy and Standards Development with the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better

I was hoping that this book of Ship Construction would have graphics defining how the ship is put together with photos and drawings in today's construction methods. Unfortunately it does not fill the bill. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better at illustrating the construction techniques from the mid 1950's. There have been updated versions subsequent to the book edited by David Arnott. There is also a better book put out by Reed's series on ship design which has line drawings to illustrate the construction techniques which has been updated over the years. I wish that Mr. Bruce's book did more illustrating of the bow structure, the stern framework, the double bottom tankers strength members, and the strength members and plating which are integrated to make the ship strong and seaworthy.

As an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, I have successfully treated numerous people for mental/emotional concerns over the past 17 years. This very readable book raises the public's awareness of the wonderful possibilities Chinese medicine holds for mental/emotional healing.

Do I have patients and friends for whom pharmaceuticals work to help them cope with life better? Yes, and they are happy to take these medications for as long as they need. Are there others for whom pharmaceuticals have not worked and have even caused greater distress? Absolutely. For these people, there is hope in other arenas, and one of the aims of this book is raise awareness about that. What Chinese medicine can do is still so unknown to most people in our country, and I am deeply grateful for this book providing such useful and interesting information.

I really appreciated the author sharing his experiences, both from his life and from his practice. As a trained social worker, he has worked in the arena of mental/emotional issues for most of his life. He talks not only about fixing problems but also about balance, which is the foundation of Chinese medicine and lifestyle. If you are exploring options for treating mental/emotional problems, or are just curious about Chinese medicine, definitely check out this book.

Immensely brave book about past sadness

I was looking for another book with "hope" in the title, when I met Dr Michael Davey in the bookshop I had entered. He briefly described his book and my first feeling was that I couldn't bear to read about such sadness.

I bought the book nevertheless and it was indeed awful to read about the disappointments and anguish of a little boy, making his way through a world peopled by many ruthless adults, many disfunctional adults and a few decent people. It is not surprising that many young people who go through such childhoods choose to go onto drugs and behave in a random, self-destructive way. They have nothing to guide them towards positive, realistic behaviour. However Michael Davey seems to have dug deep and found the courage to rise above the pain.

Bit by bit young he has found his way from misery towards hope and on towards a better life. Many have traveled such a path. For instance many refugees come from lives of horror and despair. However it is still heart wrenching to read of a little boy being so alone in the middle of it all.

I am so glad the Dr J Michael Davy's book is now a best-seller. The act of writing it probably helped him to discard some of the recurring memories and intrusive thoughts that plague those who have lived through trauma. It seems that he is becoming ever more healed and that his life can now be whole and happy and also his family can be protected from the misery that he went through.

The old fairy story of spinning straw into gold has a useful image here. Dr Davey has taken the straws of rejection, disappointment, disillusionment and pain and he has spun them into the gold of a well-told tale and a happier life.

About the Author
KRISTEN JOHNSTON is an actress, a teacher, and now, an enormously celebrated writer. Johnston is one of the founding executive directors of SLAM, a board dedicated to creating New York City's first sobriety-focused high school. She lives in NYC with her pit bull Pinky, who suffers from a food addiction.

Born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Mike Johnston has had a long and notable career coaching hockey, including coaching and assistant coaching for the Vancouver Canucks in 1999, Canada's National Men's Team, the Canada Selects, Canada's 1998 Winter Olympics team, Canada's junior team, Team Canada at the World Championships from 1995 to 1998 and again in 2007 as well as the University of New Brunswick men's Varsity Reds hockey team, where he was 1994 coach of the year. Mike was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings from 2006 to 2008 and is currently the head coach and general manager of the WHL's Portland Winter Hawks.

Great Condition, but Book Pics Need to be Updated

I really like this book. It breaks everything down and includes all the basic techniques you need to start as an IV tech. The pictures of people and equipment need to be updated since they look like they were from the 80s or early 90s and some of the pictures showing techniques don't really give enough detail (i.e. a before and after picture with no inbetween about how to get to the after). Other than that, the book was awesome and delivered in excellent condition.

The important of septic technique can not be over emphasizer. Anyone familiar with Emily Law with know sterile procedure in not a playing issue in pharmacy.

About the Author

Matthew N.O. Sadiku received his B.Sc from Ahmadu Bello University, and his M.Sc and Ph.D from Tennessee Technological University. He is currently a professor at Prairie View A&M University. He was previously a senior scientist with Boeing Satellite Systems, system engineer with Lucent/Avaya, full professor with Temple University, and assistant professor with Florida Atlantic University. Widely published and highly decorated, Dr. Sadiku is a registered professional engineer, a fellow of the IEEE, and a member of the ACM. He has served as the IEEE Region 2 Student Activities Committee chairman, and as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Education.

Warsame H. Ali received his B.Sc from King Saud University, his M.Sc from Prairie View A&M University, and his Ph.D from the University of Houston. He is currently teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Prairie View A&M University. He was previously with NASA, Glenn Research Center, and with Texas Instruments. Dr. Ali has authored 80 research articles in major scientific journals and conferences, given several invited talks, and received many NSF, AFRL, and DOE awards. His research interests include digital PID controllers, digital methods to electrical measurements, mixed signals testing techniques, and more.

Chapeau!

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" disappointed a number of Indy fans, perhaps surprised at the darker tone of the second film, and is generally regarded as the weakest film of what is currently a trilogy. Not so the novelisation.
Whereas the first book was a turgid and often plodding slog this second volume gets the tone absolutely spot-on. The joy of the Indiana Jones films is that they are are B-movies, big budget and carefully crafted, but essentially homages to the Saturday serials and action adventures of the thirties, and the novelisation of "Raiders" seemed to entirely miss that point, and thus failed to capture the thrills and flavour of the cinema version. It cannot be easy writing a novel based on a screenplay anyway, since there is a severe time constraint and the very real possibility that the finished movie may veer dramatically (ahem... no pun intended) from the early written version. This is certainly one reason for a few of the more disappointing scene changes in the "Raiders" novel.
"Temple," however, is much closer to the finished film, adding to it by way of thoughts and motivations for the characters but thankfully avoiding the trap of getting mired down in efforts to produce a "serious" work. James Kahn's book is slim and has rather large type when compared to the first and third novelisations, but in this case I regard that as a plus.
The pace is furious, the action as ripsnorting as you could wish and even - goodness, I can't believe I'm saying it - Short Round actually comes over as rather a good character, which is more than you can say for the film. Indeed, going back to the movie after reading this book I found that my disappointment with the second film had abated somewhat. It is still a less exciting ride than "Raiders" and not such a glorious romp as "Crusade," yet there is much to enjoy on screen and especially in this book. A pity that Mr Kahn did not pen the later original Indy novels, as they would have been vastly improved by a writer with a keen sense of what a damn good B-movie should be all about. Hats off, indeed.

Great resource for beginners

I've done press work for a number of years, so I was familiar with a great deal of the material covered in this book: how to approach the media, how to compile crash lists, etc. I think that this information, as it is presented by Yale, would be very helpful for newcomers to the field.
What I appreciated as a more experienced person was the inside information and advice on handling difficult situations. I also found the end-of-chapter checklists useful and enjoyed reading the many quotations from reporters and PR professionals. These appear throughout the book and they tie the advice given to the opinions of people in the fields.
If David Yale is considering revising the book for the year 2000, I would recommend a whole section on the internet.
This book, even without much on the web, is worth the twenty bucks. The behind-the-scenes information and media relations do-s and don't-s make it a worthwhile purchase.

Great for Beginners or Those Doing Publicity as a Second Job

In short, get this book if you are needing to get started in PR as part of your job, or are a beginner as a PR specialist.
My first PR job was at a nonprofit with no money for 'real' PR. This book helped me use the few dollars we had without comprosing quality required to make a good impression to publications.
It explains the basics, what make a good PR person, and how to pull together the job of convincing others to cover your stories. How to get pics published, media visits, controversy. Logically written, it outlines options and reasons for responding to various situations.
A great asset.. this book has a solid directory of resources to help you get your job done.
No essential is left without guidance. However, missing from it is a "new" essential, the web. Maybe a newer edition will come out to cover this?

Excellent Resource

This is an excellent resource, especially for someone looking for more than just the basics, as so many other books publicity/PR books do. If you're just starting it does cover tha basics as well, but it goes in more depth answering questions that anyone trying to get publicity will soon have. Do you call a journalist after you've sent a press release? This is the type of question that I needed answered and no other book I saw answered them. Most other books I've seen on the subject cover the basics that you can find by doing an internet search for free, this is the only book I found that actually has more to say.
