Preface
The present volume is an outgrowth of a Conference on Mathematical Tables
held at Cambridge, Mass., on September 15-16, 1954, under the auspices of the
National Science Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The
purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the need for mathematical tables in the light
of the availability of large scale computing machines. It was the consensus of
opinion that in spite of the increasing use of the new machines the basic need for
tables would continue to exist.

Numerical tables of mathematical functions are in continual demand by scientists
and engineers. A greater variety of functions and higher acciu-acy of tabulation
are now required as a result of scientific advances and, especially, of the increasing
use of automatic computers. In the latter connection, the tables serve
mainly for preliminary sm-veys of problems before programming for machine operation.

For those without easy access to machines, such tables are, of course, indispensable. Consequently, the Conference recognized that there was a pressing need for a modernized version of the classical tables of functions of Jahnke-Emde. To implement the project, the National Science Foundation requested the National Bureau of Standards to prepare such a volume and established an Ad Hoc Advisory Committee, with Professor Philip M. Morse of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as chairman, to advise the staff of the National Bureau of Standards during the course of its preparation. In addition to the Chairman, the Committee consisted of A. Erdelyi, M. C. Gray, N. Metropolis, J. B. Rosser, H. C. Thacher, Jr., John Todd, C. B. Tompkins, and J. W. Tukey.

The primary aim has been to include a maximum of useful information within
the limits of a moderately large volume, with particular attention to the needs of
scientists in all fields. An attempt has been made to cover the entire field of special
functions. To carry out the goal set forth by the Ad Hoc Committee, it has been
necessary to supplement the tables by including the mathematical properties that
are important in computation work, as well as by providing numerical methods
which demonstrate the use and extension of the tables.

The Handbook was prepared under the direction of the late Milton Abramowitz,
and Irene A. Stegun. Its success has depended greatly upon the cooperation of
many mathematicians. Their efforts together with the cooperation of the Ad Hoc
Committee are greatly appreciated. The particular contributions of these and
other individuals are acknowledged at appropriate places in the text. The sponsorship
of the National Science Foundation for the preparation of the material is
gratefully recognized.

It is hoped that this volume will not only meet the needs of all table users but
will in many cases acquaint its users with new functions.

About the Author
Michael Grosso has taught humanities and philosophy at Marymount Manhattan College, City University of New York, and New Jersey City University. He is affiliated with the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia, is on the Board of Directors of the American Philosophical Practitioner’s Association, and is a past editor of the journal for that association. A mind-opening book

Michael Grosso was particularly qualified to write this book. He is: a PH.D.; a former professor of philosophy; the author of several scholarly books and many, many scholarly articles. He is also author of a book about his own extraordinary experiences, complete with speculations on what they mean. He is a lapsed Catholic, a polyglot able to read the original Italian records concerning Joseph of Copertino, and a believer in the scientific method. All this comes together nicely in this little book that examines Joseph's life and circumstances in a very interesting, perhaps unique, way.

The outline of Joseph's biography is covered in a relatively few pages (about 20). All the rest of the book concentrates on the right question: "Given the facts, what do they mean?" What do they say about reality? What do they say to us, today? Particularly, given the evidence of what is possible, where do we go from here? I can't think of a more important topic.

It seems to me that in our day both science and theology are somewhat crippled, because they don't take each other seriously enough. Science -- particularly the most materialistic form of scientism -- dismisses theological concerns, "knowing" there can be no such thing as miracles, non-physical reality, or teleology. Religious thought, similarly, dismisses the idea that its experiences might be studied by those not sharing the beliefs but wiling to examine the data. This divorce impoverishes science, because it removes whole areas of human concern from careful investigation, -- and religion, because if "spiritual" concerns are unconnected to mundane reality, how relevant can they be?

So it is a relief to find thinkers such as Michael Grosso, willing and able to investigate all sides of a seemingly-well-known phenomenon. His arguments, and his tentative conclusions, are nothing short of mind-opening.

This is a Special and Wonderfull unique book. A Great read.

This book is very special and wonderful. Michael Grosso Ph.D. is not a typical historian, nor a typical scientist, nor a typical spiritual person, but rather manages to hold all these separate and usually opposing views simultaneously in a unique way that is thoroughly refreshing. This book is extremely well researched. Grosso searches for feasible, scientific explanations of how St. Joseph of Copertino might have levitated. Yet, in this book Grosso also explores what the spiritual states St. Joseph might have obtained that allowed him to not only levitate, but also to manifest countless other forms of miracles. The fact that the Inquisition itself tried St. Joseph twice and both times found him innocent of any crime other than breaking the normal ways in which our world functions said so much to me. I enjoyed this book for many reasons, but the main reason was that it is not a “New Age” spiritual book in the general sense, yet neither is it a scientific investigation out to disprove magic and miracles. In the last chapter Grosso explores the hypothesis that if St. Joseph’s case is historically supportable, then what other beliefs and ideas of what is possible in the material world do we have to reconsider. An overall great book, but it is the last chapter that truly convinced me that knowledge about a fifteenth century Saint is most relevant for expanding the modern mind.

I skimmed through the book, but also failed to receive any communication directly from the author's website. Some strange beliefs are entailed here, or at least the denial of the Scripture (from Genesis to Revelation) as being the only and fully inspired Word of G-d. Gen 6 was quoted as having 8 people on the ark as the Word of G-d says. This author claims that perhaps others were on the ark as well. That would make G-d a liar which He is not. A man can only have one wife, not as many as he wishes. Sorry, while the author does have some historical knowledge, he is not grounded in The Truth (aka Messiah Yeshua).

Chapter 1
Discovering Our Child Within

The concept of the Child Within has been a part of our world culture for at least two thousand years. Carl Jung called it the 'Divine Child' and Emmet Fox called it the 'Wonder Child.' Psychotherapists Alice Miller and Donald Winnicott refer to it as the 'true self.' Many in the field of alcoholism and other chemical dependence call it the 'inner child.'

The Child Within refers to that part of each of us which is ultimately alive, energetic, creative and fulfilled; it is our Real Self―who we truly are.
With our parents' unknowing help and society's assistance, most of us deny our Inner Child. When this Child Within is not nurtured or allowed freedom of expression, a false or co-dependent self emerges. We begin to live our lives from a victim stance, and experience difficulties in resolving emotional traumas. The gradual accumulation of unfinished mental and emotional business can lead to chronic anxiety, fear, confusion, emptiness and unhappiness.

Saved my life

This made a huge difference in my life as I faced the past that I had buried and found out that it wasn't really that scary at all. It was simple really--I just wanted attention and never quite got what I needed growing up. Now that I am an adult I can give myself the attention I need because that inner child isn't really a separate entity but is a vital part of who we are. The childish wonder and acceptance we are taught to repress is what we can use to motivate ourselves through life.

This book can relate to so many people that come dysfunctional families, alcoholic families, addict families and can cover so many areas. Some part do not pertain to me but there are a lot of things that I can definitely relate to.

In the early 1990s, Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo became known around the world as the “Ken and Barbie Killers” after the young lovers were convicted of crimes related to the rape and murder of two teenage girls. Karla Homolka is one of Canada's most despised criminals. In the early 1990s, she and her husband Paul Bernardo drugged, raped, and killed three schoolgirls in Ontario. Shockingly, one of their victims was Homolka's own younger sister. While Bernardo received a life sentence, Homolka made a plea deal and served just 12 years. She was freed in 2005, and Canadians became obsessed with the whereabouts and life of this serial killer turned loose. In the Kindle Single Finding Karla, Canadian journalist Paula Todd goes in search of Homolka, who disappeared in 2007. It's a quest that is, in a word, unnerving. With the skills of a detective and the determination of a bounty hunter, she travels thousands of miles to find someone who has gone to great lengths to be unfindable. Ostensibly, Todd is tracking her down for research on a book about released convicts. But really, Todd's mission is to fulfill the collective curiosity of a nation. The narrative snowballs with suspense towards the moment when Todd and Homolka meet face-to-face. As one of the first people to truly locate Karla Homolka in Guadeloupe (way back in 2009)I find this book contains very little substance that could have been included. It's mostly conjecture and personal opinion, and many of the "facts" she's included are wildly misleading or incorrect all together.

Her "dangerous" spin on the matter, irritates me to no end. She didn't risk her life making the trip. She flew to Guadeloupe, France, to interview a housewife with three children, a job and her own home-based business who at one time was convicted of Manslaughter x2 and sentenced to 12 years for her involvement.

I don't dispute Karla has the capacity to kill, or to be dangerous, but a woman toting three children around while she operates a business and teaches ESL, doesn't come across to me as any comparison to drug cartels and international criminals.

She makes it sound like it was so difficult to find her when in actuality, it took me three hours to locate 6 of her actual online profiles and websites she regularly contributed to, her real address both in Canada and France, all from the comfort of my own home.

I don't discredit any of Todd's previous works, I've not read or seen them and refuse to feed the ego that was absolutely shocked that Karla Homolka had no idea who SHE was. This same woman vilified Stephen Williams, author of Invisible Darkness and Karla: A Pact With The Devil, on TVO in regards to the charges of breaching the publication ban that were eventually and quite rightfully dropped.

She jumped on the bandwagon then to vilify one of her own kind at a time when he could've used the support from other members of the Journalism community. I find it extremely difficult to take her seriously or to give her any credit, other than she braved the long flight there, got harassed by locals because she had no husband with her and located Karla in a place where the majority of the population are Haitian, so a white Canadian Woman with three mulatto children should have been quite easy to find.

I would LOVE a refund for this one.

worst book ever

Very disappointing read and not worth the purchase. You're captivated because it is disclosed to you that the author will eventually find Homolka, but when she does, the interview is not worth the paper it is printed on. The information that was published could well of been made up as nothing at all was forthcoming in the meet.

About the Author
Immanuel Ness is professor of political science at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, and a founding member of the Lower East Side Community Labor Organization, an autonomous activist organization in New York City. His research and writing focuses on social and revolutionary movements, labor militancy, and migrant worker resistance to oppression. Ness has just completed Guest Workers, Corporate Despotism and Resistance,(forthcoming University of Illinois Press) a book that examines the rise of guest workers from the global South in the US and labor opposition to employer abuses. He is author of numerous books including an anthology of contemporary labor: Real World Labor, with Amy Offner and Chris Sturr (Dollars & Sense). He edits the peer-review quarterly journal, Working USA: The Journal of Labor and Society, and has also edited several reference works, including the International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest: 1500 to the Present, and, with Aaron Brenner and Bejamin Day, the Encyclopedia of Strikes in American History.

Dario Azzellini is a writer, documentary director and political scientist and lecturer at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. He splits his time between Berlin and Caracas. His research and writing focuses on social and revolutionary militancy, migration and racism, people’s power and selfadministration, and workers control, with extensive case studies in Latin America. He served as Associate Editor for the the International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest: 1500 to the Present, and was primary editor for Latin America, the Spanish Caribbean, and the new left in Italy. Ours to Master and to Own is fantastic- it's chock full of case studies on the subject of worker's control covering different revolutions and movements. It's a great read. Also, on a shallow note the book itself is really lovely to hold in the hands, so it's worth having on your shelf rather than just as a pirated PDF. The book's organization makes it possible to pick out particular instances from history without having to slog through 200 pages of academic writing, but not at the expense of rigor of course. You're going to love this book. It's probably timely too because Richard Wolff just put out Democracy at Work: a Cure for Capitalism, which apparently discusses several contemporary studies of businesses owned and operated by workers., but the book in question will draw your attention to the specific problems worker's counsels have faced in the past. I highly recommend Ours to Master and to Own for anyone interested in how folks dealt with organizing their work place, the kinds of problems they encountered (counterrevolutionary unions, in-fighting, etc), and whether or not the claim that 'vanguards' are really impositions from above (isn't this the zombie chant we've all heard a million times before?) . You'll be pleasantly surprised!

About the Author
W. Robert Knechel is the Ernst and Young LLP Professor of Accounting in the Fisher School of Accounting at the University of Florida. Professor Knechel holds a B.B.A. from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has served as the resident auditing research fellow at KPMG Peat Marwick LLP. He holds a CPA in the state of Florida and is an active member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Florida Institute of CPAs and the Institute of Internal Auditors. Professor Knechel has served as the Chairman of the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association and was responsible for initiating the Biannual Auditing Education Conference and the Auditing Section Mid-Year Meeting. He also served as the Director of Education for the Auditing Section. Professor Knechel has written extensively on auditing issues in research and education for over 15 years, having published over 30 articles during that time in respected academic journals. He has actively pursued the development of case materials for auditing classes. He ahs also made presentations on auditing research, practice and education at numerous forums in the United States, Australia and Europe. Most recently, Professor Knechel has revised the Excellence in Audit Education program sponsored by Coopers & Lybrand LLP. In April 2006 he will be the Ernst & Young Professor of Financial Accounting at the University of Auckland.
