Another MiG gets its turn

By my count (they aren't numbered) this is the twelfth book in the "Famous Russian Aircraft" series begun by Midland and now carried on by Crecy. This is the third under the latter imprint. It's a large format (the pages are 8-1/2" x 11") hardcover with 480 pages. This is an update of an earlier softbound book in the Aerofax series by one of the same authors that appeared in 2002. The earlier book was 144 pages so one expects much more content in the present book and that is largely the case.

The book is organized almost exactly like the others in this series. There are nine chapters each covering a significant aspect of the MiG-17 story. A chapter is devoted to the design, development, and testing of the aircraft. There follows chapters covering production, the Soviet versions, the Chinese and Polish versions, the details of the design, Soviet service, foreign service, foreign contemporaries, and a breakdown of all the operators of the aircraft. Outstanding in my view are details of MiG-17 operations against intruders, both intentional and otherwise. Operations in every war in which it was involved are covered but naturally Vietnam and the middle east get the most coverage. Also the "in detail" chapter has a number of drawings specially prepared for this book along with some drawings from contemporary technical literature. Photographs abound, both black and white and color. The latter are restricted largely to those that survived to more recent times as color photography was not common in the Soviet Union when the aircraft was in its prime.

Disappointments are the usual ones with this series. There are no maps which is unfortunate because most English speaking readers will be unfamiliar with all the exotic places. The line drawings are largely the same ones that appeared in the aforementioned Aerofax softcover but not as many. The color profiles on the other hand are completely new.

The book is highly recommended. If you have others in this series you'll want this one. I hope other titles are in the works. Surely, the Tu-16, MiG-19, MiG-23/27, Mi-24, Sukhoi interceptors, etc, etc are deserving?

an excellent book about a great aircraft

Gordon is an excellent writer about former Soviet aircraft and I have many of his books. This one is no exception and is an exhaustive history of an excellent fighter aircraft from its genesis to it numerous variants. I also recommend his volume on the MiG-15 as a companion to this volume. Unfortunately, his books go out of print quickly and have high prices on the secondary market. It's a pity the publishers fail to make additional printings.

I am a big fan of Yelfim Gordon books and this one does not disappoint. Lots of great pictures plus all the details that a modeler or aviation historian would want.

Huge Disappointment

Ok so this is supposedly the final book, but I don't see how when there are still quite a few loose ends. There was minimal drama in this book, really just a lot of back and forth between the couples. I can't understand Skylar at all. First she aborts her first child, then she runs away after she finds out about the second pregnancy after having been there for Harlem J. She was just so stubborn and confused. I really don't get the whole Aaron dating situation. Umm how you start a relationship with another man when your pregnant and in love with the babies father. Uhhhh she was just, all kinds of wrong. Now she is just stringing this man along knowing where her heart lies. Thats just trouble waiting to happen. Then there's this whole Chyna debacle. This girls just pops up as a jump off and suddenly she's Ava's long lost nut job of a daughter come on now. After stirring up all that drama with Devin and Harley she just happens to fade off. Thats just so unrealistic. This book was just everywhere. Cams baby mom is M.I.A. like come on be real this ratchet chick lived for the drama. To top it off there's the whole Mariyah situation with Alyssa popping up. I mean dang really who approved this book. There should've been a lot of back in forth before this book came out because its seriously lacking depth and it just doesn't live up to the potential of the series at all!!!!!!

Great Ending

Now that's how you end a series. I have been riding with this series from day one and I tell you it has been a Beautiful journey. It's hard to say goodbye to the RBM family but I will sure be keeping up and waiting patiently for the spinoffs. I am happy that there was minimal amount of drama and for the most part everyone got their happily ever after. Just want to say Thank You Demettrea for giving us a BANGING SERIES.

Just okay

I am glad it's over. Somewhere along the way, the storyline lost its appeal. I also think that as a veteran author, I have not seen growth in her writing style. These one to two paragraph chapters are not indicative of a seasoned writer. Maybe she needs to change from 1st person to 3rd person to give this characters more layers and personality. It was like reading about a multitude of immature adults whose families had plenty of money resulting in their offspring lacking genuine talents or interests other than the drug game. I still don't know their likes, dislikes, hobbies etcetera because everything was centered around making up and breaking up while having babies. Also, the usage of "to" and "too" correctly was all never consistent. I recommend this author really reads my feedback, get a few test readers that are not pen mates or friends and build up her craft. She has vision and decent storylines, just marginal execution.

Missing CD or Instructions to Download Simulation Files

I am confused how this book can be of any use. There is no CD or instructions in the book on how to download the files necessary in order to use the Excel simulations the author created for the book. Without the Excel files this book is completely worthless. With the Excel files I would imagine the book gives you basic instruction on how the simulations are created and should work. I'm hoping to receive instructions on how to get the files otherwise this book is a complete waste of money! Please let me know if you can help!

A good supplement if you have the right prerequisites

This Schaum's outline is a better reference and source of examples and problems than it is a stand-alone tutorial. It does a pretty good job of outlining the material and kinds of problems you need to solve in a course on mechanical vibrations, but the explanations fall somewhat short. Also, remember that to understand this material you should already be familiar with matrix algebra, calculus, and both partial and differential equations, as well as your engineering mechanics. The wave equation and even Lagrangian dynamics are mentioned, and you are going to need to already understand those subjects if the problems in this book are going to make any sense. If you want a good cheap textbook on the subject that does a great job of explaining everything, I recommend "Mechanical Vibrations", by Hartog and published by Dover. That book was written many years ago, but it is still better than the expensive newer texts on the subject. In summary, buy Hartog for the explanation, buy this Schaum's outline for practice problems and a quick reference. You'll wind up with two books that comprise a self-contained course on mechanical vibrations for a total cost of less than thirty dollars.

Excelent book

It is an excellent complement for exercising when you have strong theoretical fundamentals. This IS NOT a book for having as a reference for theoretical stuff. The mechanical vibration theory is very well explained on other textbooks like Mechanical Vibrations (Dover Books on Engineering) or Vibration Problems In Engineering, 2nd Edition. The difference lays on that the great number of solved exercises allows you to gain a lot of practice and to reinforce your study on the topic.

I found this to be useful as an aid to understanding the topic as well as learning how to set-up and perform the necessary calculations. As with any topic, especially in the sciences, it is not the best singular source of information regarding mechanical vibrations.

A page turner of a romantic suspense

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Envelope is R. Sue Oleson debut novel, and it is a romantic suspense. It is heavy on the suspense with just the right amount of romance. It is a stand-alone novel.

From page one, this book is a page turner that I found hard to put down. Ms. Oleson has done an excellent job building the tension in her story. The pace at which clues are found is just right to keep readers engaged and guessing. The complexity of the murder mystery is perfect—it isn’t a mind bender and it isn’t too obvious. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the story interesting. The ending was not the one I had suspected!

The romance between Detective Ben Anderson and suspect Carol Long was just okay for me. I liked the character of Ben Anderson, but I didn’t care for Carol as the week, passive and sheltered female lead. While the character of Ben seemed current—a normal guy, not overly controlling, brilliant or rich—the characterization of Carol seemed to be dated (circa 1950). Regardless of how I felt about the characters, they were well developed. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well.

Ms. Oleson is an author that I would definitely read again.

AMAZING!

This is an absolutely amazing book. Contrary to some people, the plot keeps you on your toes and guessing. Just when you think you've figured out "who done it", you get the shock of your life when the real "who done it" is revealed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance / suspense novel that you can't put down. I can hardly wait to see what Mrs. Oleson has in store next.

The Envelope This book has a very well thought out storyline and characters. It's riveting and kept my attention to the end, I couldn't put it down! "The Envelope" is well worth the time and money, you will thoroughly enjoy and be entertained!
