I didn't think I would like it because the calendar pages are black and white

I had second thoughts about this calendar after I ordered it. I didn't think I would like it because the calendar pages are black and white. All my other calendars had colored pages. I love it because it has great info on each page and I look forward to reading it everyday even though the pages are black and white.

This is the 4th year we've purchased the Farmer's Almanac Everyday Calendar. It's a page-a-day calendar, and each day has some interesting new fact or quote.

If you enjoy The Old Farmer's Almanac, you'll like this calendar, too - it's published by the same company and like the almanac, is chock full of little-known-facts, tips, practical advice, proverbs and quotes.

Each day, there's a tip (maybe gardening, cooking, home remedies, or just how to do something better), an interesting fact, or a thought-provoking quote.

There are all sorts of old-fashioned and whimsical drawings that illustrate each day.

At the bottom of each page there are 3 widely-spaced lines where you can write notes for the day.

Every now and then there's kind of a dud (like the day on the 2014 calendar where they suggested for long-lasting chrysanthemums, you should buy one with many buds in various stages of bloom!...so obvious). but they are few and far between. Most of them are interesting, witty, practical or thoughtful.

We've bought so many different page-a-day calendars over the years, and often lost interest after a short time. But this one has kept my, and my husband's interest - we look forward to tearing off a new page each day and seeing what interesting new tidbit is there. This is our 4th year buying this calendar and if you like the almanac, trivia, or folk knowledge, I think you'd enjoy it too.

About the Author

John McMurry, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

David S. Ballantine received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1977 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1983 from the University of Maryland at College Park. After several years as a researcher at the Naval Research Labs in Washington, DC, he joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Northern Illinois University, where he has been a professor since 1989.

Carl Hoeger received his B.S. in Chemistry from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1983. After a postdoctoral stint at the University of California, Riverside, he joined the Peptide Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in 1985 where he ran the NIH Peptide Facility while doing basic research in the development of peptide agonists and antagonists. During this time he also taught general, organic, and biochemistry at San Diego City College, Palomar College, and Miramar College. He joined the teaching faculty at University of California, San Diego in 1998. Dr. Hoeger has been teaching chemistry to undergraduates for over 20 years, where he continues to explore the use of technology in the classroom; his current project involves the use of video podcasts as adjuncts to live lectures.

Virginia Peterson received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between her undergraduate and graduate years she worked in lipid, diabetes, and heart disease research at Stanford University. Following her Ph.D. she took a position in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri in Columbia and is now Professor Emerita. When she retired in2011 she had been the Director of Undergraduate Advising for the department for 8 years and had taught both senior capstone classes and biochemistry classes for non-science majors. Although retired, Dr. Peterson continues to advise undergraduates and teach classes.

Mediocre Text

I had to purchase this book specifically for a college chemistry class (required the Mastering Chemistry Online component too). Having used another chemistry book several years before, I was preloaded with knowledge that made me realize how thin this text is compared to others. Much of the content is oversimplified where details are needed. Worst is the number of syntax errors in the chemical equations. Superscript numbers and mismatched charges. These simple editorial mistakes add a tremendous amount of confusion to an entry level chemistry student. Many of my peers spent much time scratching their heads rather than quickly absorbing content and moving forward. If you're thinking about purchasing this text for your own benefit (self-paced learning) skip it and pick up Introduction to General, Organic, & Biochemistry by Bettelheim, et al. If you must use this text for a class, I recommend picking up a second chemistry book to cross-reference. This book does have some strengths (great pictures, lots of good work problems at the end of each chapter, and plenty side-note information that ties the material to real world/healthcare related matters. The errors, however, make it so I can't recommend it to an entry-level chemistry student.

I really enjoy this text because of the organization, the simplification, and the way it uses illustrations to demonstrate important principles. I'm in Organic Chemistry now and also used the same text for inorganic chemistry last term. The only element of the text that is not helpful is all the errors. But, my professor gives us extra credit for finding the errors. So, I suppose it all works out in my favor. Sometimes the errors are typos and other times they're completely off-track. The "Selected Answers" book for the 7th edition is also error ridden. At times it gives you answers to questions that do not correspond to this edition, which is not helpful. But I do recommend purchasing the selected answers manual. It has helped me 90% of the time understand a problem due to the extended work shown or explain to a classmate how a problem is carried-out. Good luck, and have fun!

Olga Fischer is Professor of Germanic Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam, where her Ph.D. thesis Syntactic Change and Causation: Developments in Infinitival Constructions in English was accepted in 1990. a little flat for me

I have really enjoyed this series thus far but this book left me a little disappointed. I adore Race, Cody and Kasey a lot.

Jesse I am just on the fence. I admire her, What she has been through she is pretty strong. I hate what happened in her life. There is just so much back and forth about her.

Will I read the next book in the series? Probably...

Another solid read

So here we are, with the fourth book in the Full Throttle series and Lisa Nowak has proven once again that cars, teens, and familial emotional angst, are topics that will capture your attention throughout the entire book.
Cody and Jess are two teens who are drawn together by chemistry, similar pasts and common interests but it's not enough to allow Jess to break down the walls she's built to protect herself until the worst happens. With her new family of friends supporting her, she struggles to reach deep down inside of herself to put to rest, once and for all, the guilt and haunting memories that are tearing her apart.
With Redline, I think Lisa has grown as an author right along with Cody and Jess, the teen characters in her novels. Her writing style is maturing and she's gotten very comfortable with the emotional situations and dialogues. Her humor is spot on perfect. Her proses have developed to a level of the seasoned author with passages like `The words twisted like a key inside me, moving old tumblers that have long been rusted solid. But I'd be an idiot to let her in.'
You won't be able to put this one down. I promise.

Misleading and Biased

This book is misleading in its title because it is not at all a short introduction to dreaming. It is rather am introduction to the author's own theory of dreaming, for which there is considerable refuting evidence.
The theory seeks to make dream content irrelevant and argues that it is the result of random signals. A description of this theory is interspersed with intermittent Freud-bashing. There is no appraisal of other theories or theorists, no attempt to consider the purpose of dream metaphor, and little modesty when it comes to sharing the questions still left unanswered by his theory.
That is not to say that the theory (known as Activation-Synthesis) is not extremely interesting and useful. If you are looking for an overall introduction to dreaming, and expecting a balanced approach, you will be very very disappointed. If you want a detailed insight into the Activation Synthesis Theory of dreaming in simple language, then this is a good book. If the book was titled and sold as that I would have given in 4 stars.

Best book on dreaming and sleep

This is one of the better books I've read on Dreaming. The details of the neurobiology of sleep was a wonderful surprise, and makes much more sense of dreaming. I've read a lot of books on dreaming, all of which were filled with psychological guesses, speculation, and they just never made sense to me. This book presents excellent arguments and studies for the biological aspects of sleep, and the logic that consciousness is a brain function. This books takes a look from a better perspective, IMHO, sticking to the biology of sleep, and the reality of what we are of aware of and not during dreaming, and the lack of memory thereafter. Great book!

Intro to dreaming

This introduction to dreaming takes its readers through the perspectives, history, and biology of dream science. Primarily focusing on the paradigm shift from studying the content of dreams to the studying the form of dreams, the books begins by discussing Freud and his contribution to dream science. If you have any interest in psychology you will find this section interesting additionally the content of this introduction brings up many other aspects of dreaming still discussed in psychology today. Particularly throughout the book the discussion of consciousness comes up. I personally found this discussion of waking and dreaming as polar states of consciousness very interesting. In addition the book puts to rests certain myths about dreaming. One of my favorites was about the misconception that when we dream we are often reliving or going through the previous day's events when in all actuality six to seven days before is what influences your dreams. This book is very much based in materialism therefore if you are approaching dreaming from the perspective of the noetic sciences this is not the book for you. For example the author very quickly dismisses the idea that dreams can foretell the future without any acknowledgement of the arguments brought up by people within parapsychology. Although I felt its basis in hard science refreshing, at times I felt it was hard to follow given that I do not have a strong background in hard science. Overall if you have any interest in either the psychology or biology of sleep and dreaming you will find this book very interesting to read.

#Struggles is a game-changer for me

Craig Groeschel’s latest book, #Struggles, has impacted my life so much. I wish everyone in my generation would read it. So often, we struggle with comparing ourselves to others through social media, and #Struggles has really reshaped how I view my use of technology.

From the first page, Craig had my attention — especially with this line: “I have a love-hate relationship with technology. Most of us are well acquainted with this feeling, but we can’t quite put our finger on why. We know we’re obsessed with our devices, but we don’t know how to mange the challenges that come with using them, challenges that continue to multiply. We’re busy, but bored. We’re full, but empty. We’re connected, but lonelier than ever… WE know God intends for us to have something different, something better, something more. But we aren’t sure how to find it.”

One of my favorite points that Craig makes is “Life is not about how many likes you get. It is all about how much love you show.” That quote hit me hard when thinking about how much time I spend on social media.

The book is broken down into eight sections:

2. Restoring Intimacy: The Struggle with “Likes”
3. Revealing Authenticity: The Struggle with Control

#struggles is both timely and relevant

#struggles is a book on Christian discipleship in a world where technology and social media are getting more attention than ever before. Did you look at your phone the first thing this morning? Was it the last thing you looked at before going to sleep? Have you ever posted on social media and felt the urge to check it a minute later to count the number of "likes?" This book is written for you.

Groeschel knows a thing or two about technology and social media. He is the pastor of LifeChurch.tv, the second largest mega church in the U.S. The church produces the YouVersion Bible app that has been downloaded over 199 million times. He knows technology, uses it well, but provides some counsel on keeping it in check so we don't lose focus on what's most important.

Sometimes our culture celebrates overuse...

Writing this review, I hear a commercial on the radio for a real estate agent where the announcer says doctors had to take her phone away during a stint in the hospital because she refused to stop working. The thrust of the message is that she works so hard you should call her to help with your real estate needs. Is this an example of being on the phone too much?

When was the last time you were more than an arm's reach from a screen? How long did it last before you had anxiety and wanted to check it?

The author admits to having #struggles himself, and gives examples from his own life and others he is acquainted with to make his points. If the end result is bringing more attention to Jesus in a God honoring way, Groeschel will support it. However, if it is a distraction from Him, or worse, he offers guidance to help.

With average users posting 75-80% of their social media content about themselves, it is easy to see how Jesus and other people can be left out of the equation. For Christians, focusing this much attention on oneself is a serious problem.

This book is a very practical guide from an author who is tune with his target audience. For its relevance and timeliness, it receives five stars.

The timing of the message #struggles brings is perfect. It gives practical advice on how to focus on what truly matters in life in the midst of social media. There can be a lot of pressure to post the right pictures with the perfect filter and witty yet original captions. Then when you post your masterpiece, and you don't get as many "likes" as your friend did, you feel rejected and discouraged. Then you take even more time to find the perfect picture next time. You end up missing out on so much of life because you are watching it happen through a lens instead of enjoying it! This book brings real-life truths and advice on how to avoid those traps.
