Love Life

I devoured Love Life. Never have I read a more honest, disturbing, and brilliant account of the way uncertainty in love and life can translate into obsession and erotic fury. I recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid to take a magnifying glass to the darkest corners of the self. The truth is, Shalev's seemingly bottomless reservoir of fresh, gorgeous imagery and her nearly flawless command of language make even that view beautiful. I can't imagine that anyone who reads this book will be left unaffected; when i finished it I felt eviscerated. But pleasantly so.

An intriguing storyline, but nearly unreadable prose

I started reading "Love Life" because it is being made into a movie by Maria Schrader, the famous German actress (who is also infamously philosemitic). So, I wanted to see what the big deal was. Also, a friend had highly recommended the book to me.

I was deeply disappointed.

The basic plot is intriguing, but I found Shalev's prose to be almost unreadable. Nearly the entire novel is told in stream-of-consciousness style. Most sentences are extended narrations with unusual punctuation, combining numerous ideas. Here is a real example:
"Your father's sure he was there on some sort of security job, living on his rich wife's money, a guttersnipe who married money and now he's come back to show off the airs and graces he picked up in Europe, and I saw that her eyes were fixed on the mirror on the opposite wall, watching the words coming out of her mouth, dirty, venomous, and again I thought, who knows what she's capable of saying about me, and I felt suffocated next to her and I said, I have to go, and she exclaimed, not yet, trying to keep me with her like she tried to keep him, stay with me until he goes, and I asked, why, and she shrugged her shoulders in a childish gesture, I don't know."

That may not seem seem bad, but nearly every sentence in the novel is like that. 290 pages of it. Ultimately, the writing style distracts from the plot, which is never a good thing for a novel.

a wonderful book

I loved this book. it may be different, and it's either you LOVE it or you dont like at at all. at first you dont understand what is going on in Yaara's mind, falling in love in such an obssesive way with her father's friend, an older and not so attractive man who doesnt treat her the way you would like to be treated. but as you keep on reading you start understanding Yaara's inner complicated world, and many things are starting to make sense. I also love Zeruya Shalev's way of writing. it's almost poetic,and the character seems to be driffting from one episode to the other...very much worth reading.

Three wonderful stories by three great authors

I am a huge fan of Candace Camp and just starting to be one for Diana Palmer, but Elizabeth Bevarly was a new one to me. I loved the Camp and Bevarly stories the best because they seemed more genuine and believeable. I found myself involved in both stories before I knew it. I liked "Calamity Mom" but not the male character, Faulkner, so much. He was too bossy and self-centered for my taste. The main female character, Shelly, was very likeable and so was Faulkner's son, Ben. He was a hoot! This is a good, easy read for a relaxing day.

In 1932, two North Carolina teenagers from opposite sides of the tracks fall in love. Spending one idyllic summer together in the small town of New Bern, Noah Calhoun and Allie Nelson do not meet again for 14 years. Noah has returned from WWII to restore the house of his dreams, having inherited a large sum of money. Allie, programmed by family and the "caste system of the South" to marry an ambitious, prosperous man, has become engaged to powerful attorney Lon Hammond. When she reads a newspaper story about Noah's restoration project, she shows up on his porch step, re-entering his life for two days. Will Allie leave Lon for Noah? The book's slim dimensions and cliche-ridden prose will make comparisons to The Bridges of Madison County inevitable. What renders Sparks's (Wokini: A Lakota Journey of Happiness and Self-Understanding) sentimental story somewhat distinctive are two chapters, which take place in a nursing home in the '90s, that frame the central story. The first sets the stage for the reading of the eponymous notebook, while the later one takes the characters into the land beyond happily ever after, a future rarely examined in books of this nature. Early on, Noah claims that theirs may be either a tragedy or a love story, depending on the perspective. Ultimately, the judgment is up to readers?be they cynics or romantics. Here is a first novel that many people are banking on: the Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club are featuring it as a main selection and film, foreign, and serial rights are already sold. At 80, Noah Calhoun reads daily from a notebook containing the love story of Noah and Allie. We learn of the teenaged lovers, their 14-year separation and reunion in New Bern, North Carolina, just weeks before Allie is to marry another man. Back in the present, we learn that Noah and Allie did marry and were happy for more than 40 years. Now, they are residents of a nursing home, separated both by rooms and, more profoundly, by Allie's Alzheimer's. Noah's daily reading from the notebook is not to himself; he reads aloud to Allie, hoping that the power of their love story will reach her. Noah's coping mechanisms as an old man are exceptional, and the novel's format, focusing just on the dual beginnings of their love story and its denouement, is intriguing. This is a more romantic testament to love's enduring miracle than Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County (LJ 3/1/92) because the Calhouns chose the rigors of daily domestic life over a dream of four days. I started reading this book at bedtime and found myself closing the cover well into the wee hours of the morning, unable to put it down. The story of Noah and Allie is a testament to love. Spanning a decades long relationship, The Notebook is about a love affair which has stood the test of time and is as deeply seated in love at the end of this couple's journey as it was in the beginning. As Alzheimer's exacts its toll on Allie's mind, wiping away the memories of love and family and joy, she is left with the story of her love affair with Noah, as described in his notebook. Through the story's telling by Noah, as he reads the notebook to Allie, we learn of the stormy beginning and the relationship that almost wasn't. We feel the passion and fire of first love and the trials and tribulations they endure when it comes to an end. But though having spent years apart, neither are able to forget the other and when good fortune tosses these two back together, the chemistry between these characters is as alive and vibrant as in the beginning.

Allie and Noah's love endures and they live their happily ever after. But the true gift of this story is that the reader gets to move beyond the fairytale end experience the peaks and valleys of "ever after". Heart-wrenching and hopeful, this book has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf. Sparks clearly is a wonderful storyteller with a tremendous grasp on the complex nature of love and human nature.

Ok, the reading list I am using this year listed one of the books that had to be read as "your mother's favorite book." So I asked my mom, she said this one, so I read it. That's what you do when your mom tells you to read a book, right? And yes it was sweet and enjoyable the whole time. My interest in it started to wane after it switched from them being young to them being old, but it was still entertaining enough the whole way through, just not as much a page turner after that. The biggest thing that bugged me (and bugs me a lot in this genre) is the whole love story being about someone cheating on their significant other takes away the sweetness of the love story. Just call the other person and say we are on a break (because as Ross taught us it doesn't count when you are on a break) so it actually can be a sweet love story and not a story about someone cheating!

Oh! I did want to say! I love how this book was realistic enough to realize people needed showers. Wasn't it gross in Harry Potter how you followed them all day for months and they never bathed? Both characters bathed a reasonable amount of times, and it just made the book that much more enjoyable.

Sugar-coated love story

The Notebook, a "tragic" love story by Nicholas Sparks may tug at the heartstrings of some, but I frankly believe it left much to be desired. The tale begins at a nursing home, where readers are introduced to elderly, rheumy-fingered Noah who reads aloud a story from his "notebook," to another occupant of the hospital, a girl he cares deeply for... (it can be gathered that he does this quite often) As the story unfolds, it is clear that the notebook is more of a diary than anything, giving insight into Noah's background and flashbacks to life as a younger man, most notably his relationship with Allie, and the sentiments that followed her absence. Shortly after, the novel flips perspectives to Allie, as she decides to pay a spur of the moment visit to Noah, her first real (not to mention "forbidden") love, hoping it will give her more confidence that she is making the right decision in marrying her fiance Lon, the wedding of which will take place in a matter of days. However, seeing Noah brings back many unresolved feelings, and the two quickly realize that they are falling for each other all over again. Things become even more suspenseful when Lon catches on... Will Allie stay true to her heart or remain faithful to the man she is engaged to marry? C'mon it's Nicholas Sparks, you tell me.
The Notebook deserves three stars because honestly, I expected more. It was the most contrived piece of literature I've ever laid eyes upon and as idealistic as can bee, but it possessed this strange addictive quality that sucked you in regardless of your intentions. The fairytale vibe was reminiscent of Taylor Swift, and I can definitely see the appeal it has for the people who half-believe this could actually happen, but man could it get anymore sugar-coated? Depsite all of this, the uncanny desire to keep you reading in addition to my curiosity behind all of the hype is really what made The Notebook worthwhile.

About the Author
For many years, Rebecca Wright wrote and directed drama for middle school and high school students for her church. She co-founded a Christian acting group called One Voice. It was a dream of hers to combine writing, acting, and helping youth.



Rebecca currently works in a totally "non-dramatic" profession as a Technical Writer. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/Marketing from the University of Kentucky. Whether you are an actor, writer, athlete, or scholar, Rebecca suggests this anonymous quote as a daily mantra: "You aren't finished when you lose; you are finished when you quit."

I used many of these with a 6th grade performing arts exploratory class. The kids LOVED the choices especially the "duologues" and "triologues". I found them a wonderful resource for teaching perspective, as well.

About the Author

D. C. Moore was born in 1980 in Duston, Northamptonshire. He took part in the Royal Court's Young Writer's Programme and his first full length play Alaska was produced there in 2007. In 2008 Alaska was awarded the Tom Erhardt Award for promising new playwright by the Peggy Ramsey Foundation. Moore's other plays include The Empire (2010), Honest (2010), Town (2010), and The Swan (2011). He was nominated for the 2010 Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright, while The Empire won the 2010 TMA Award for Best Touring Production.
