The field of interior design encompasses a unique blend of art and science. I have always told my students that successful designers construct a balance between their left and right brains. The designer's goal in any interior should be to analyze the needs and desires of the client, and then through the synthesis of this information to create a healthful and safe environment that enhances the client's quality of life. It is the mission of this text to assist beginning designers in achieving this goal.

Significant Changes in the Ninth Edition

The ninth edition of Beginnings of Interior Environments discusses foundation information that assists the reader in understanding the nature of interior design and the practice of the interior design profession. The text continues in the tradition of earlier editions as an introductory and practical approach to understanding interior design. Although early editions focused primarily on residential design, the more recent editions expand readers' awareness of commercial design as well. The ninth edition also includes new information on sustainable design, Internet resources, and on aspects of multicultural awareness.

The most significant change in the ninth edition is a discussion on visual literacy, including Gestalt psychology, patterning, and organization. This is followed by a discussion on concept and its application in the interior design process. Special features on sustainable design and actual design scenarios have been updated.

Much care has been taken to update images and ensure that illustrations and figures clearly enhance the text discussion. One of the greatest challenges of updating texts is as Don Schlizt once said is "knowing what to throwaway and knowing what to keep." With almost 100 new images and plans from practicing professionals and over 150 updated and new illustrations, the text continues to be stimulating, intriguing, and current.

Text Overview

The following synopsis of each part of the text is repeated in the Introduction to ensure that students understand the broad knowledge base required of interior designers.

Part I, "Introduction to Interior Environments," discusses the history of the design profession and reviews in detail the process by which interior designers complete an interior space. Drawings and drafted plans demonstrate the use of visual communications. A pictorial essay on the history of style will familiarize students with significant eras of design that influence today's interiors.

Part II, "Design Fundamentals," establishes the basics for the study of design in all creative fields. Part II emphasizes visual literacy and the principles and elements of design that guide designers in technical and decorative design decisions. Color is given special attention because of its complexity.

Part III, "Building Systems," emphasizes the architectural, electrical, and mechanical aspects of design. This section assists future designers in understanding the visual communications needed to collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and structural engineers, the client, and the rest of the design team.

Part IV, "Space," addresses both the technical requirements and the creative dimensions of planning the layout of furniture and rooms. Designers learn to read floor plans by thinking and visualizing in three dimensions (3-D). These chapters encourage designers to recognize space as volume and to design from the inside out.

Part V, "Furnishings, Fabrics, and Background Elements," provides a foundation for understanding the multitude of selections available to designers.

Finally, Part VI, "The Profession of Interior Design," discusses the steps required to become a professional member of the interior design industry. It reviews basic business practices and the ethics and outlook of the profession.

Ancillaries and Supplements

As an additional education tool, the Instructor's Manual accompanying the text develops standard test questions and practical studio design problems. Also available is a Student Packet, which contains assignments and plates for students to execute in color paints.

About the Author
Adventurer and world traveler, Anton Swanepoel, hales originally from Pretoria, South Africa, but has called a number of exotic locations home. Educated as a software engineer, he worked for a large multinational company before deciding to travel the globe. Along life's journey, Anton became a skilled scuba diver and technical diving instructor, teaching for seven years while living in the Cayman Islands. His resume touts Tri-Mix instructor levels from multiple licensing agencies, and dive records over 400 feet.

Mr. Swanepoel has always loved travel and writing. In the past several years he's combined these passions, authoring and publishing a host of books, sharing secrets he's learned along the way. When he's not exploring an underwater landscape or racing a motorcycle down a stretch of highway, you'll find Anton visiting world destinations and chronicling his experiences.

I've recently began researching information on the Angkor Wat Temples as I plan to visit the area this coming summer. I ran across Anton's book by accident, but I'm highly grateful for that bit of fate! Anton's travel guide is exactly what I was looking for as I only plan to spend 3 days visiting and exploring these temples and ruins. He perfectly described each location of interest, and his guide was crucial for me as his useful GPS coordinates helped me map out my own personalized tour. With the information he provided and his beautiful photos, I know exactly what sites I want to visit, how to navigate them on my own, and even save money that I would have had to spend on a guide. I highly recommend Anton's travel guide for anyone looking to spend a restricted amount of time in the area and anyone who wishes to see as much of the beautiful temples and ruins that they can.

A Splendid Virtual Visit

I’ve just spent the past couple of hours visiting dozens of ancient Cambodian temples with the help of Mr. Swanepoel. This is the second of his books that I’ve purchased and been equally impressed with each. Not having the temperament to be a world traveler has not lessened my interest in historical sites, and so a book like this takes me away to places I will likely never touch, but can experience through the authors lens.

The descriptions are succinct, with enough information to begin planning a trip, but the pictures and explanations were the draw for me. The photos are crisp, well placed and varied. I enjoyed them the first time through but will visit each page again in the near future. I would recommend this eBook for anyone thinking of visiting Cambodia or for those of us who can live vicariously through the adventures of others. I had fun with this book.

That is when extra-terrestrials landed on earth that behaved like ethnologists. They observed a number of societies and disappeared again, promising that they would return some day. The Stone Age people hadn’t understood anything and categorized the foreigners as “gods.” And that is how religions were established.

How could knowledge like that be lost over the millennia? And why is it still being suppressed in our day and age that is so enlightened?

DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST !!!

Before you click "NO" (you don't like this review) please consider the following very carefully ... First, I have been a loyal, life-long fan of von Daniken and his theories since I first read "Chariots" as a young man in the early seventies and NOTHING has changed. I own and have read every book he has authored available in English and still have most of the original hard copies in my extensive personal research library. I had the honor of meeting Erich and presenting him one of the first copies of my own book "Intelligent Intervention" which supports all of his major premises. I dedicated my book to Erich and began the opening chapter with one of his best-known quotes: "The keys to our future lie hidden in the past." Erich has secured his place in history. The future will only increasingly serve to support his knowledge that Earth was visited long ago by advanced aliens. Therefore, when I state that this particular book is not great, I make this claim without malice or insult and from an exceptionally well-informed perspective. The transliteration from German to English is very poor, making the English version in serious need of a competent editor. Moreover, this book is simply a loosely-collected compendium of many various pieces of evidence (some strong and some VERY weak) which might support his thinking. The strong "evidence" was already presented in his previous books in a much more scholarly and precise manner. Much of the newer evidence in this book is not well-established, scantily described and doesn't contain "source footnotes" so that a reader can do additional study to confirm its legitimacy. My suggestion is 'don't read this book' ... unless you have first read some of his classic works such as "Chariots of the Gods." Most important, don't judge his credibility by this book alone, he is far more knowledgeable than is evidenced here in this poorly crafted read. I hold von Daniken's contributions to humanity in the highest esteem, but I have concerns that this particular book, taken alone, could detract from all of the fine prior work he has shared with humanity throughout his entire life and career.

Disappointing

I have been an admirer of Von Doniken's work since I first read Chariots of the Gods many years ago. (I read a first US translation.) in the End of Silence, he attempts to build a case for the secret societies of our world to reveal the truth about Ancient Astronauts and visitations of the "gods".

I'm afraid his book bored me. It rehashes old ideas while neglecting to present any new information.

My advice is avoid this book.

It's The Book I Refer People To When They Won't Stop Asking Me Business Questions

I met Ebong when he was looking for entrepreneurs to interview for this book. Months later, when I read the finished product, I was sincerely blown away. Where most small business authors are extremely vague and offer obtuse instruction, Ebong gives you the detailed points. He has a way of giving you the exact information that one needs in order to seriously begin the entrepreneurial process. I specifically love that how he Skips the flowery jargon and gives you the kick in the pants that you need in order to move forward.

As a business owner, I am constantly receiving a barrage of requests for coaching and advice. Now that Ebong's book is out, I just give them a copy (I bought a bunch). It saves me time and gives them exactly what they need.

Start Your Summer Reading with Start Me Up

my interest in Ebong's book was part personal and part professional. i have written very few reviews on here but "Start Me Up" deserves a word of mouth endorsement (and this is an unpaid endorsement). i will cut to the chase as Ebong often does in his book. And in fact, that is one of the virtues - this is an easy read; he doesn't over-reach or try to talk over the reader. what's most impressive is that you do not need to be an accountant or economist or have a finance degree or even own your own business to follow along.

The substance of the book can be easily applied to those outside of those sectors and even in your life outside of business. Ebong's upbeat, optimistic personality comes through loud and clear, making more enjoyable than most so-called business books. I highly recommend.

Awesome!

This book gave me a better understanding of what I needed to do to get started without spending a boat load of money! As an entrepreneur myself, starting your own business (especially for the first time!) can be nerve racking but this book makes it really easy to understand everything and relieves a lot of stress.
