My God what passes for a historic romance!!!

Maybe this book does not deserve such low rating-others seem to have loved it, so maybe this book simply isn’t my cup of tea.
I gave it such low rating because it is the first historic novel I didn’t bother finishing and I have read thousands- some very poorly written.
The writing isn’t bad- the author is clearly talented, articulate and eloquent.
I hated it cause it was a historic romance novel that was neither historic nor romance, nor a novel (it kind of reads like a series or excerpts from H and h’s diaries, in which they relive their sexual encounters and occasionally analyze their developing feelings).
Our heroine is at odds with her younger sister, because she screwed her sister’s ex-boyfriend repeatedly, while they attended a university together- give me a break, a university.
And she screwed him where- in her dorm room- My God!!!! (ok the author never mentioned the dorm room, I just assumed- cause where else would a lady in a corset be alone with a gentlemen, while attending the same university-whatever).
Then she marries our H (in a business transaction) and after that for 6 months they each proceed to screw other people day in and day out, until one merry morning, having just arrived to his parent’s estate, they discover that they prefer to screw each other instead, and they continue to do so, day in and day out-for the rest of the book.
The elderly mother faints a few times- so I presume that someone gets ill, or some other twist of faith happens- but I will never know, cause I abandoned the book, and removed it from my Kindle.

Holy WOW!!
After I read Becoming Lady Thomas, I was hooked! I had to know what happened to Edith and Alexander. Their story was just what I'd hoped it would be! Even if they started out as just an agreement, it didn't take long to see more in each other's eyes. Maybe it was something they saw all along, but didn't want to believe it.

When reading the first book, I thought Edith was very spoiled and didn't seem to truly care about her sister's feelings. This book showed that Edith is much more fragile than she led on. She was actually broken, but was strong enough to push through it all. I found myself loving her!

"A woman like myself really could fall for a man like him. She wouldn't even have to try that hard."

Alexander. Whoa, buddy! That man is mysterious, sexy, sweet, and he loves his mama! That's a plus! Ha!
Did I mention sexy? Because Lawd!!
The best thing I liked about him was that he also was fighting an internal battle -- a battle of acceptance from his family. He was now ready to prove his worth and Edith was his perfect partner.

"It will have to be us against them."

The more time Edith and Alexander spent together, the more they realized the attraction couldn't be denied. Trust me. The heat was melting off the pages. I found myself fanning my face quite a few times! I swear, I think that words sound even more sexy when the story is set back in time!
K. Webster knows how to write a historical romance!!

"This man makes no sense to me. I hate him, yet...I don't. I simply don't. In fact, I crave more of him. I crave the urge to slap him and then let him screw me senseless."

"Edith infuriates me yet turns me on. She is crazier than any loon at an asylum, yet I want to keep her as mine."

I'm telling you!!! This book was just great! I loved getting to know Edith and Alexander more, meeting his family, and getting to see Elizabeth and Jasper again. These characters have settled in my brain and I NEED MORE!!

I will sit by and *patiently* wait for the next book. I'm counting down the days! Keep these historical romances coming Mrs. Webster! You truly have a gift for them:)

A stunning continuation of the Becoming Her series.

How do you go into a book despising a character and come out giddy and loving them? It JUST happened! K. Webster always writes multi-dimensional and appealing characters in all of her stories, but this one packed a surprise punch that I did not expect. In Becoming Lady Thomas, I set my mind to detest Edith. That thought quickly evaporated in Becoming Countess Dumont and was replaced with empathy. As has been said in other famous literature, "The game is afoot." But, in the game there are winners and losers, and Edith is afraid of which she will become.
"I feel as if I'm drawn to you like a fly to honey. Your magnetism allures me in a way that confuses me. But I crave it nonetheless."

The trials of new marriage are hard enough without adding more weight from the past and present. We are originally introduced to Alexander and Edith in Becoming Lady Thomas, Book 1 of the Becoming Her series. Edith is Elizabeth’s older sister. Alexander is Jasper’s friend and confidante. Edith is jaded. To her, love is a facade. Nothing more than words. And she is none too innocent in proving this outcome. She has had her own fair share of mischievousness, and our eyes become enlightened to exactly what depth her deceit has travelled. Alexander doesn't quite know what to do with a woman like Edith. But he won't tolerate others treating her in an ill manner. He has a mixed state of emotions with her, causing us to wonder how this couple can possibly make this crazy scheme work. Together they are fire and ice. Both fierce elements, seemingly working against one another, but both from the same thread in life. We are taken from one extreme of emotions to the other in this read, coming to the conclusion that love saves, awakens, and renews.
"This is the most delicious thing I have ever tasted, Alexander.I could lick up every morsel and never be satisfied for I would always crave more."

Becoming Countess Dumont was crafted in typical K. Webster fashion. It was hot, sexy, snarky, and full of love; everything in a book that makes my heart happy . Edith and Alexander's story was another beautiful addition to her historical romance collection. Outside of their relationship, Edith also developed a fondness for another character in the story, which, in my opinion was one of the most beautiful developments. I felt like it solidified her path with definitive direction. There were so many moments that just made me stop and smile with a goofy grin on my face. The fast pace of the story and moments of retrospect made me fall further in love with every word on each page.

"You filled a part of me that was incomplete. Without you, I'm nothing."

Kulick analyzes the various ways travestis modify their bodies, explores the motivations that lead them to choose this particular gendered identity, and examines the complex relationships that they maintain with one another, their boyfriends, and their families. Kulick also looks at how travestis earn their living through prostitution and discusses the reasons prostitution, for most travestis, is a positive and affirmative experience.

Arguing that transgenderism never occurs in a "natural" or arbitrary form, Kulick shows how it is created in specific social contexts and assumes specific social forms. Furthermore, Kulick suggests that travestis—far from deviating from normative gendered expectations—may in fact distill and perfect the messages that give meaning to gender throughout Brazilian society and possibly throughout much of Latin America.

For seven months in 1994, Kulick lived in a household of "travestis"--Brazilian male prostitutes who live as women. He constantly tape-recorded their casual conversations, whether on the street soliciting customers or in their small rooms in the ghettos of Salvador, and has been able to trace the motivations behind their behavior and body modifications with plausibility and compassion. Read this even if it's not for class!

I originally read this book for my Anthropology of Sex class in undergrad. While I do think that many people seem to be reading it for class, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in anthropology and/or trans culture, even if not of Brazil in particular. It's a short read and Kulick's writing style is easy to follow.

It's a great ethnography that does a wonderful job giving a voice to "travestis" (a word used to describe the transgendered prostitutes in Brazil and many other parts of South America) and really gave good insight to the trans culture and LGBT rights and rights of sex workers in Brazil.

Do keep in mind that this book was published in 1998, and that Kulick's academic background is primarily Linguistic Anthropology, though he has become highly influential in studies surrounding the queer community.

Great Ethnography!

I read this ethnography for an anthropology class on sex and gender and it is definitely my favorite read from this class so far. Kulick does so a good job giving voices to this extremely marginalized group. The kindle version has constant typos that need to be fixed. Lots of "I"s were instead typed as 1s. This is the only flaw but besides that everything else about this book is great! Highly recommended!

I loved this book

I loved this book. It takes an in depth description and analysis of the lives of travesti in Salvador (Brazil) and uses it to illuminate many of our taken-for-granted assumptions about gender in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Is great material for thought and classroom discussion, and it truly takes seriously the task of presenting perspectives of the research subjects.

Good content-- in between the jokes & verbose chatty writing

If jokes and verbose trying-to-be-clever writing were advertising, this book would be Oprah Magazine. But more on that later--I just needed a lead as per chapter 19 "Hook 'Em Early, Hook 'Em Hard."

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" is like an introduction 101 survey class to this topic. Among many other things, it covers the basics of the entire process from generating article ideas, to writing query letters to conducting interviews, writing basics, and even how freelance writers deal with taxes. Like a 101 class, this book provides breadth but not depth. Most beginning magazine writers will likely need more of the material on earlier parts of the process such as studying the market and writing query letters rather than dealing with taxes and contracts. However, as a survey course, they do have their place, with the exception of the chapter on writing books and book proposals. For an excellent, more in depth treatment of query letters, a topic a novice will definitely need, I recommend "How to Write Irresistible Query Letters" by Lisa Collier Cool.

Having published a handful of freelance pieces and knowing the basics of the process, I can tell you the information is provided is good, sound advice. My problem with the book is that you have to wade through so much verbose trying-to-be clever chatty writing to get to the basics you need as a freelance magazine writer. It's like the authors, unbridled from the tight word counts and no nonsense editing of magazines went nuts trying to be cute and clever. For one of many examples, there's a section called "Ratatatatat: Machine Gun Writing" which begins, "Do you feel like Bruce Willis in 'Die Hard' right about now? What the heck do we mean when we say machine gun writing?" Then there's another paragraph before they get to the definition. I think this book could have been edited by about 1/3 with no loss of content.

None-the-less, I appreciated the content in between the jokes, even though some of it was not in depth enough to my liking, such as the brief section on how to get clips. I especially liked the interviews with magazine editors discussing what writers need to do to break into writing for their publications. If you need an intro 101 survey of the career of freelance writing and don't mind wading through all the chatty wisecracking writing, this is the book for you.

This Book Sold Articles For Me

Before reading this book, I'd written and sold a couple of short fiction stories but had never tried nonfiction. I liked the idea of writing magazine articles but had no idea how to go about it. I picked up "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" because I like their simplified approach to topics and because I'd read the other IDIOT'S GUIDE Sheree Bykofsky co-wrote (Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published).
The Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles gives you a no-nonsense approach from start to finish, covering things like studying the market, generating ideas, querying editors, assignments, conducting interviews, and actually writing the article, as well as some tips on book proposals, the life of a magazine writer (waiting/praying for checks), even taxes.
After I read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" I thought up a couple ideas, fired off some queries, and sold three articles the month after I bought the book. Now I'm working on assignment (not spec) writing a second piece for one of the magazines to which I sold an article last month.
If you can write and if you have something interesting to say, this book and a copy of "Writer's Market" are the twin pillars on which you can build a freelance career.

No-nonsense, friendly advice

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles," by Sheree Bykofsky, Jennifer Basye Sander, and Lynne Rominger, is a straightforward yet entertaining book about the world of freelance writing. In such a book you might expect to find the typical information on writers' guidelines, stamped self-addressed envelopes, query letters, and making sure you spell editors' names correctly--and you will find that here. However, you'll also find quite a few other, less expected things.

The authors do not assume familiarity with the industry. They walk you through the rewards of being a freelance writer, explain why magazines hire freelancers and what freelancers do for magazines, share some success stories from real freelancers, share information from editors on what they look for in a writer, and provide a "reality check" to help you decide if this is what you really want to do. This book is particularly good about pointing out all of the mistaken attitudes, inadvertent errors and inappropriate assumptions that can mess up your chances. And it does it without either coddling you or harshing on you.

This book came out in 2000, but it does a good job of covering the basics of online publication--better than I've seen in many other places, actually. It doesn't just cover online versions of print magazines or a brief discussion of electronic rights. Instead it goes in-depth into 'zines, content providers, building your own web site in order to attract editors to you, and so on. It also goes into the business side of writing: business filing, taxes and contracts. It discusses how you can choose and create a specialty for yourself, and how you can decide whether or not you should develop an article into a book proposal!

This is a fantastic book. It contains only a handful of typos of the wouldn't-be-caught-by-a-spell-checker variety (most people probably wouldn't even notice). The advice is helpful and encouraging yet practical and realistic. I've rarely seen an approach that so clearly manages to convey the things to watch out for when freelancing without becoming preachy, condescending or morose, and there's plenty of advice in here that I haven't seen repeated in a dozen other places.

Peter's work has been published in over thirty publications worldwide and his work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe and Asia. With over 25 years experience working in the music, fashion, retail and arts sectors, Peter has worked with clients and major recording artists including Primal Scream, Beth Orton, Groove Armada, Defected, Ministry of Sound, Harvey Nichols and Paul Smith. Stalin's genocidal deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 to Uzbekistan and their almost messianic return to their cherished 'Green Isle' in the 1990s are examined in detail, while the author's archival investigations are bolstered by his field research among the Crimean Tatar exiles in Uzbekistan and in their samozakhvat (self-seized) squatter camps and settlements in the Crimea.

Beautifully written history of this small Muslim-Mongol ethnic group's struggle for homeland and survival.

The Muslim Crimean Tatars, the last remnants of the Medieval Mongol invasions of Europe, have been making headlines ever since the Russian conquest of the Crimea in the spring of 2014. But its difficult find to find information on this pitiful remnant of a once mighty nation that is battling the Russians in their native land. This book is a beautifully written history of the Crimean Tatars, from the time of their brutal conquest in the 1700s by Catherine the Great to their more recent conquest by Putin. Williams begins by recreating the lost world of the fascinating Crimean Tatars that was lost in the Russian Imperial conquest. He brings to life a rich Islamic culture that fell to pieces when the Russians ethnically cleansed this ancient race. But the worst was to come under the Soviets when Stalin genocidally cleansed the Crimean Tatars to the deserts of Soviet Uzbekistan. Williams masterfully recreates the Crimean Tatars struggle to survive in this inhospitable land and return to their ancestral homeland on the Black Sea. Most hearteningly, Williams uses Russian sources and lived with the Tatars in their places of Stalin-imposed exile in Uzbekistan and in their post-Soviet repatriation settlements in the Crimea (where they are clashing with the local Russians who moved into their land during their exile) to collect their moving story. It is a powerful story of the survival of a small nation, and imperial conquest on the edge of Europe that will be of interest to anyone who is interested in genocide, Russian, Muslim and Mongol history

About the Author
Mary Ann Cunningham teaches geography and geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental studies at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. Her research involves using GIS to assess landscape-level problems in conservation and biodiversity. In particular, she is interested in understanding the nature of fragmentation in grassland environments and the effects of fragmentation on the make-up of bird communities. The agricultural landscapes where she has been working represent a complex and fascinating interaction of issues concerning working landscapes, resource use, remnant wildlife habitat, and landscape aesthetics. It is at the intersection of these issues that she likes to try and understand the geography of physical environments. Mary Ann earned a PhD in Geography at the University of Minnesota, an MA in Geography at the University of Oregon, and a BA in Geology at Carleton College.

William Cunningham is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota where he taught for 36 years in the Departments of Botany and Genetics and Cell Biology as well as the Conservation Biology Program, the Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability, the Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership, and the McArthur Program in Global Change. He received his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas in 1963 and spent two years at Purdue University as a postdoctoral fellow. At various times, he has been a visiting scholar in Sweden, Norway, Indonesia, and China, as well as several universities and research institutions in the United States.
Dr. Cunningham has devoted himself to education and teaching development at the undergraduate level in biology.  He began his educational career in structural biology but for the last 10-15 years has concentrated on environmental science, teaching courses such as Social Uses of Biology; Garbage, Government, and the Globe; Environmental Ethics; and Conservation History.  Within the past four years, he has received both of the two highest teaching honors that the University of Minnesota bestows  -- The Distinguished Teaching Award and a $15,000 Amoco Alumni Award.  He has served as a Faculty Mentor for younger faculty at the university, sharing the knowledge and teaching skills that he has gained during his distinguished career.

About the Author

Jeffrey D. Sachs is a world-renowned economics professor, leader in sustainable development, senior UN advisor, best-selling author, and syndicated columnist. He serves as the director of the Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and professor of health policy and management at Columbia University. He is special advisor to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations on the Millennium Development Goals, and he held the same position under Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He is director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network as well as cofounder and director of the Millennium Villages Project. He has authored three New York Times best-sellers in the past seven years: The End of Poverty; Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet; and The Price of Civilization. His most recent book is To Move the World: JFK's Quest for Peace.

Ban Ki-moon is the secretary-general of the United Nations, an office he assumed in 2007. He was previously the foreign minister of the Republic of Korea.

Must read textbook of everything that matters right now

This is basically a must read for everyone. It outlines the fundamental issues of concern under the most recent global development agenda; the nature of which is related to the lives of everyone, irrespective of geography or wealth. It also outlines the essential transformations the current generation needs to promote in order to avoid various social, economic and environmental disasters in the future.

The writing is very engaging, straightforward and clear; although there are sufficient references and notes for the book to provide a gateway to much deeper reading for those with an interest.

To get a bit more technical, Sachs misses the opportunity to more explicitly frame the issues as being united by the overriding theme of social justice; which I would argue, is the most powerful way to generate interest in sustainable development as a concept of relevance everyone on the planet.

Good 10 thousand foot view of development

Overall I enjoyed reading this book. I concurrently took the MOOC on Coursera and this book exactly follows the lectures. I understood the basics of development before I read this, so none of the content was completely new to me but neither was I an expert. I appreciated the breadth of the content and felt like it gave me a good overall understanding of the current issues. At times topics seemed oversimplified, but if you're looking for a deep dive into a specific topic, this isn't for you. I did find numerous editorial errors in the book, which I found unprofessional. All in all I would recommend this book if you're looking to gain a broad understanding of sustainable global development.

A great addition to any book shelf!! A no brainer...

Got it as a gift for my brother's birthday. He's loving it so far. A real must for your book collection if you like the field of sustainable development. Just a side note: even though it was written by an economist (Jeffrey Sachs), the books has a really easy-to-understand narrative with a comprehensive overview of all subjects related. Maybe it is a little bit on the economic side but it does a great job of explaining global aspects, poverty, and the more intrinsic technical details. 120% recommended.
