Eric Fromm is insighful as usual

Erick Fromm's exploration and explanation of the old testament is very interesting. He supports his thesis which centers around an interpretation that man will reach God when he accepts and acts in a Godly manner. Although many part are a bit antiquated in terms of the progress of humans and their acceptance of others, it is an insightful look behind the concepts that both the modern and conservative Jews still ponder and debate. If you want to understand some of the driving concepts of Judaism then pick up this quick read.

"Cheap Grace" vs. Ultimate Values

Erich Fromm (1900-1980)wrote a facinating study of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. His book YOU SHALL BE AS GODS is an interesting view of Old Testament literature. Fromm focused on the concepts and convictions of the Old Testament as opposed to formality and fixation on traditions. Fromm's book was an attempt to integrate such ideas as compassion, kindness, mercy, etc. with traditions to make the Old Testament literature a call to action rather than comfortable apathy. Fromm cited interesting quotes from the Rabbincal Midrash and Talmud.

The beginning sections of the book provided an interesting study of interpretations of God. Fromm argued that God changed from an unrestrained tyrant to a constitutional monarch Who was bound by His own convenents and rules. For example, even God repented re the Flood Story when He repented via Genesis 9:11. When Abraham confronted God re Genesis 18, Abraham bluntly asked God if God would act unjustly by condemning the innocent with the guilty. Fromm cited Moses' attempt to undermine God's wrath. An interesting interpretation of these confrontations is intimacy with the Supreme Being. Closeness to God and His "laws" is a thoughtful analysis.

Yet, Fromm was clear that closeness to God was NOT an attempt to define God. The phrase in Exodus 3:14 that, "I AM WHO I AM" was attempt to deter idol worship. Fromm noted that idols are dead while God and people are creative and active. Men and woman should act and should act according to God's commands and rules. Basically, as Fromm knew, the Ancient Hebrews had different views of God. God could be tied to the land and race of the Hebrews. Or God could be universal as suggested in the narrative re Noah when God made a convenent with the human race. The Hebrew Prophet Habakkuk was probably the first to separate the concept of God from the land and race. Supposedly King David's father was Hebrew, but his mother was a Moabite woman.

Not only did Fromm write about the concept of God, Fromm wrote about the concept of man (men and women). Fromm cited the Creation Story in that everything God created was good except man. God created men and women in His Image, and Fromm interpreted this view that people had to the capacity for good or evil. The goal was for people to live according to the Image of God, but people had freedom to make a choice. God's call that people should be a "Holy Nation" meant that men and women should be better than their current status.

Are men and women predestined? According to Fromm the answer was "No." As Fromm noted, a difference exists between predictions and predestination. In other words, careless behavior and evil acts will eventually result in terrible consequences. Since people are free to make decions, their acts have consequences-good or evil. Much of The Decalogue dealt with social relationships such as murder, theft, adultry, etc. Fromm alerted readers that some of the Old Testament "heroes" had serious character flaws. Noah was confused. Cain was irresponsible. Abraham was a coward when he let the men of Sodom and Gomorrah violate his wife and daughters. King David committed unforgiveable crimes. In other words, men and women can overcome their evil inclinations if willing to recognize their weaknesses and their potential to be better people.

One of the last sections of the book dealt with the Psalms. Fromm catagorized the Psalms into four types of poetry. He explained a one mood Psalm as one where the mood did not change. The first Psalm is one of self righteousness. The 23rd. Psalm is one of contentment. The 137th. Psalm is one of bitter hatred. From described a dynamic Psalm as one with a sudden mood change such as the sixth and eighth Psalms. A messianic Psalm is one that is optimistic about the future such as the 90th Psalm. A hymnic Psalm is one of praise such as the 150th Psalm.

The Epilogue of the book dealt with the 22nd. Psalm and Christ's Passion. From argued that he found the usual interpretation unsatisfactory. Yet, as G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)noted, Christ's depair was as radical statement as could be, and God was complaining to God. This is obviously a matter of interpretation, and this writer will leave the theologians to debate the issue.

Fromm's book is a good book especially for those readers who are not familiar with the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Fromm provided what may be a radical assessment of the Old Testament, but such assessments can force people to carefully read and think which was Fromm's intention.

I chose the book thru Amazon for my son and had no idea what the book would look like or the value of the curriculum. He sent my a title, ISBN and author - - you folks did the rest. I ordered - as requested - used, in fair to good condition. There was an expected 7-15 day delivery time. It was delivered in 6 days and the book was, according to my son, in near new condition and didn't have a mark in it. He stated the binding didn't look like it have ever been cracked open. This book described the different math formula's in much more detail than my instructor. I always looked in this book if I did not understand something, this book was perfect at better detailing the differnt math formula. It was well worth the purschase.

Is love blind?

Love is Blind by TJ Chester is an urban fiction book about a prostitute named Rae who is very heartbroken over the death of her mother. All she has in the world are her two bestfriends Punch and Telly who work the streets with her. We follow her on an adventure to find out what exactly happened to her mother with a surprise at the end.

This book was a decent read. The storyline had a lot of potential but seemed stagnant at times with a lot of back and forth details. I feel like the author was a tad repetitive in the way that she delivered a point. I also felt the author may have gone off topic a few times in an effort to provide background information. And while background information is needed sometimes, it was distracting from the book to read along with the storyline and then have to stop and go back to background information because the next chapter took you back to some seemingly insignificant scene in the past.

As for the characters, some of them seemed unnecessary... such as Mrs. Pritchett. Though she tried to get Rae into church, she didnt seem that important a character. I generally skipped over their parts. I felt that Rae and especially Telly were engaging characters. I wondered about Telly a lot and would have loved to know more about him. I would have also liked to know more about Ozell. I mean his motives seemed sketchy and the explanation we got in the end was a little lackluster. The love story with Kenney and Rae could have been focused on a bit more as well.

All in all, I think the book was entertaining, though a bit predictable. That being said it was actually a good story. I would be very interested in reading more of TJ Chester's books.

A great book for adults only

I took this book with me on a long weekend and it truly kept me glued to each page wanting to read what was going to happen next in the lives of the 3 crazy friends. The book took my mind on a mental journey of anger, saddness, laughter, confusion and then a sigh of relief and joy for the character at the end. And while reading the book on my flight I was saying What! Are you Serious! until I realized people were looking at me because I was talking out loud. lol This book is for adults only in my opinion because of the language and sexual situatiins in the stories throughout. But if you handle that you will really love this book. You will start out angry about the begining but end up happy and understanding the end. Great job Ms Chester. I look forward to your next project.

Love is Blind is one of the best urban fiction books I've read this year. It is filled with so much drama. I loved it! Love is Blind's characters are remarkably unique, funny, and without a doubt engaging. The entire novel is action pact from beginning to end. This book is definitely a must read! T.J. Chester's art of writing is a blast.

Misleading Pictures? Deceiving Bookseller ? Or Just Me?

I bought one of these so called "Signed 1ST edition" sold by "Powells Books" at $9.95 just to find out that except for a printed signature of the author on one of the title pages, this edition has no difference with the other copy printed by FSG which I bought from "Alibris" at $0.99. It's explained in the copyright pages of both of these copies I bought that "A signed first edition of this book has been printed privately by The Franklin Library" , which I presumed is referring to the edition shown in the pictures here. Though I don't mind keeping a copy of the so called "Signed 1ST edition" printed by FSG at the price I paid for, it is obvious that what I meant to buy is the luxuriously leather bound edition printed by The Franklin Library as shown in this particular offer through Amazon. So, if you are a Amazon beginner like me, watch out!

I was happy to find a used but in good condition book. I purchased this because it was the required book when I took the Aquatic Exercise Association Fitness Professional Certification. The book is very informative and easy to understand. I passed the test and already certified but I still refer to the book whenever necessary.

Saving people from mis-information

I have heard several people say that they felt great conflict in their religious lives and that learning about the bible from Dr. Ralph turned them around. Dr. Ralph helped them come to terms with the misinformation or mis-interpretation they've been suffering from. Dr. Ralph's views are not her own. This approach to scripture is not something new. In fact, it is the contextualist approach to scripture that the Catholic Church teaches and has been teaching for years.

Enlightening and easy reading.

Margaret Nutting Ralph is a teacher and gifted wordsmith. She expresses herself so well and it's no surprise that she understands how others use words. I have been studying and teaching religious education for the last seven years. I found this book gave me great insight into the Bible and explained some of those little mysteries I never understood. When the loving God you believe in says some of the frightening things in the Bible, Dr. Ralph explains why it comes out that way and what it really means. I would recommend this book to everyone interested in the Bible. If you get a chance to hear her speak she is a dynamic speaker, too.

Relevant, Useful and Highly Readable

This should have a much snappier title to convey the usefulness and readability of what in other hands, can be a very dry subject. Kappelman brings out the important issues and ideas, and does it with some professional flair and personality, with input from some of the best in the field. This is an excellent overview of a complex subject. The starting roundtable synopsis sets the stage, and your brain, for the content that follows. A very useful work for bringing these ideas into management discussions and practice.
