Book two has arrived! And it doesn't disappoint.

Lion starts off right where Alone ended. Which, considering how intense and epic the ending of Alone was, I was thrilled the author didn't attempt to just provide a generic summary of "what happened since," and then jump ahead to the future. Instead, the reader gets to experience the dramatic shift in Erin's character as she learns how to deal with all the changes in her life. There are times when I caught myself wanting to yell to Erin "No!", which I realize now shows how the author does not pretend that Erin is perfect, but continues to keep her character very real. Once again, I found myself not wanting to stop reading, and once again, I am looking forward to the next book in this journey through Erin's life.

I loved the second book in this series as much as the first. The character development of Erin takes a harsh turn as her new life begins, and the darkness seems like it's taking over. In the beginning, you think maybe she's just making a few mistakes, but after it keeps going and the reader witnesses her commit despicable act after despicable act, you start to lose hope and empathy for Erin. And just when you think that she's becoming the worst of what she despised as a human, things start to go in a different direction and you almost breathe a small sigh of relief because you're still rooting for her.
The writer has created several strong, female vampire main characters. They are all different, with their individual personalities, and yet none of them feel flat or lacking. You get to know all of them better in this second book, and Zhilan's back story is finally revealed in captivating detail.
Like the first book, I had no idea how this would end. The twists in the plot led up to a pretty shocking turn of events at the end.
These books prove the vampire genre is not dead, and that there are, in fact, talented writers in this genre with original ideas, strong leading characters, and the skill to bring that world to life in our imagination.
