This saying is decades old, but many organizations today are either ignorant of its truth or attempt to ignore it. Koray reminds us that quality is not something added at the end of product creation like spreading frosting on a cake; it must be a part of the creation process from the very beginning. Organizations that build quality products from inception are able to dedicate their resources to innovating their next opportunities. Those that build poor quality products must use their resources responding to unhappy customers and repairing defective products. While the correct choice seems obvious, many don't get it. Koray points the way.
The other phrase Koray uses is "... should first be handled as a people issue rather than a technology issue." In this wisdom, he paraphrases Gerald Weinberg's Second Law of Consulting: "No matter how it looks at first, it's always a people problem." People--their needs, wants, desires, and relationships--are the foundational elements of identifying clear requirements, precise implementation, and devoted use. Surgeons often see "cutting" as the solution to many medical problems, while internists see "medicine" as the solution to those same problems. We, as technologists, often see "technology" as the solution to technology problems. This approach is evident from the first stirrings of Agile (write code to implement those tests) and is repeated in today's DevOps (write code to implement those environments). Instead of solving a problem with more code, Koray warns us to look toward the people issues first.

About the Author
Koray Yitmen is the board member of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) local chapter, the president of International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) local chapter, and the president of User Experience Professionals' Association (UXPA) local chapter.
As a business partner, Koray has led many multi-national, cross-functional teams in the banking, telecommunications, insurance, media, and information technology (IT) industries for more than 15 years. Challenged by the diversity of his projects' cultural, domain, and people issues, Koray has succeeded by putting the needs of his projects' target users first.
In 2000, he started his career as a technology consultant at Accenture. Having worked at Accenture, he has been the business partner of BA-Works Business Analysis Services, Keytorc Software Testing Services, and UXservices UX Design Company since 2005. He has a B.S. in Computer Science and an MBA in Entrepreneurship. He is a strong advocate of the business motto "Quality is not tested, but built" and tries to implement this motto in every IT project in which he is involved. His greatest happiness of life is giving back to the community. Thus, one hundred percent of the net profit from this book's sales will be donated towards primary school initiatives.

Easy to read

A very well-written and concise book for practitioners. Puts business analysis, testing and usability into perspective. Real-world experiences shape its content. It offers sound guidance for IT projects and highlights ways to prevent IT project failures. Easy to read. Yitmen's generosity of donating the earnings of this book to education is thoughtful. Definitely recommended.
